Battery Service & Maintenance
Batteries are one of the four main components within a UPS system, alongside the inverter, rectifier and static switch. Unfortunately, batteries are also the component most likely to fail. There are many reasons why batteries may fail prematurely, including; environmental conditions (temperature), over-usage (multiple discharges and recharges), overcharging, length of time left discharged, etc. With so many variables affecting the life span of batteries, it's easy to understand why careful and frequent servicing of batteries is paramount to ensuring UPS performance.
Here at The UPS Team Ltd, we offer only the highest battery servicing and maintenance checks to minimise failure rates. Our services include checks on the current performance of the batteries, utilising physical assessment of the batteries, and looking for swelling, cracks, leaks and corrosion. Once assessed, engineers will look to clean the batteries and the terminals, leaving them in the best physical state possible. Testing the batteries to check the condition is next via an impedance analyser, our preference is Hioki as they, in our opinion, deliver the best and most reliable results. Analysing the data provided by the Hioki resistance tester can give a quick and clear indication of any problematic cells without placing the batteries under any unnecessary stress. Our engineers will check UPS settings are correct on each service visit, which will prevent any overcharging settings from being in place. Engineers, upon completion of their checks, may offer recommendations depending on their findings. These could include retro-fitting temperature compensation probes, adding battery monitoring hardware to measure cell performance constantly and consistently or possibly replacement of block(s) which are showing end-of-battery life conditions.
Our engineers are skilled, trained and highly experienced, being careful to undertake potentially dangerous DC battery works with care and safety in mind. Engineers will remain onsite until battery service and battery maintenance work has been completed. Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) will be issued for sign-off prior to our teams beginning the work and they will ensure all good working practices are adhered to.
The UPS Team Ltd has a waste carrier license and is able to provide recycling services for UPS batteries, should this be required. Get in touch with our technical sales team today for more information on our services and engineer availability.
