Power pathway

When utilising an external wraparound bypass switch, power feeding the critical load is from the bypass output. Although you can achieve UPS protection from the UPS output, i.e. on smaller UPS with IEC outputs, by plugging devices directly into these connections, these items will lose the functionality of the bypass and, in the event where wraparound is required, it is likely that clients will need to power these devices down.

The picture shows this in a little more detail, and whilst it may seem obvious to most, we have seen critical load plugged straight into the UPS outputs time and time again.

Whilst most of the installation process is completed via UPS engineers, final connections are often by the end client/IT professionals with limited understanding of external bypass switches. To help avoid these problems, communication is key. Key when submitting proposals to clients to help them understand the products they are purchasing and communication on site so that clients are fully informed, helping to ensure they can make the final connections safely and correctly.

Whether it’s a plug and play setup or hardwired installation, these problems can occur from time to time. With The UPS Team’s support, you can get the most out of your configuration and maximise your site’s uptime.
