UPS the basics

Rackmount UPS depth

Rackmount UPS systems are designed intelligently to allow for installation into server cabinets, rather than taking up floor space. Where floor space is at a premium, rackmount UPS can slot into already existing server racks to maximise the use of footprint.

Whilst these specially designed systems can reduce costs thanks to limiting floor capacity required, depth of systems varies within manufacturer product ranges and indeed between manufacturers.

Taking Riello as an example, there are many options available for rackmount UPS systems. Mainly ranging from low capacity, sub 1000VA power up to their new(ish) Sentryum rack UPS range which achieves 20kVA per UPS unit.

Similar capacity UPS can be utilised in shorter depth cabinets than others, taking up more space in terms of height (or U space) but a reduced depth front to back. This means that should a shorter depth cabinet be currently available for UPS location, standard rackmount UPS systems may not be usable, whereas their short depth sister products are modified to allow for this to happen.

Generally, the way this is achieved is through removing the internal batteries from inside the UPS system and supplying them as a separate battery module. This often doubles the U space required, but means the products can be installed without having to remove front or rear cabinet doors.

Product ranges within the Riello UPS portfolio which adhere to this short depth requirement are, for example, the SER series, or Sentinel Rack. These products can allow for installation within a 600mm deep cabinet as the UPS frame is only 380mm.

Attention must also be drawn to the possible need for battery cabinets to achieve minimal runtime, such as with the SER3000ER. This product alone does not provide battery power and would need to be paired with an appropriate battery pack.
