So, after understanding what a UPS is (a power source in the event of a mains anomaly), what’s next?

The 4 key components that are often discussed when talking about UPS are:

  • Rectifier

  • Battery

  • Inverter

  • Static bypass switch

Each has its own role to play within UPS architecture. But, why are they there and what do they do?

  • The rectifier is utilised to convert AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current)

  • The battery is the power source when conventional power is not available.

  • The inverter converts DC power back to AC.

  • The static bypass switch is the failsafe in the system that allows mains power to flow around the other components, should they become damaged.

There are of course other components which make up UPS, but these 4 are mainly talked about.

What does it mean to you? Well, each part must be robust, well-designed and well-maintained to ensure the performance of the UPS is at an optimum level. Selecting a UPS from a manufacturer with a history of product development, a wide catalogue of products and one that utilises high-quality components is vital.

Next time you buy a UPS, the best way to check the quality is to look at the batteries. There are many companies that manufacture batteries for UPS systems, but the quality and performance vary massively.
