Industry standards for UPS systems can vary.
Looking specifically at WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications) standards, designed to define a wide range of mechanical and electrical equipment used within the UK water industry, UPS systems are covered within.
As you can imagine, one of the leading requirements for the Water Industry in regards to UPS provision is higher levels of protection against water ingress.
Commercial UPS are often supplied with IP2X rated enclosures, with the majority being utilised within commercial settings, where water and dust ingress are minimal issues.
However, industrial UPS systems or higher rated enclosures can be obtained with commercial UPS components or systems stored within, helping to preserve the integrity of the UPS hardware from harmful intrusion.
Not all applications within water treatment environments require heightened IP-ratings. Those systems being integrated into comms room style environments can still adhere to the standard commercial protection levels. For harsher environments, increased protection levels are needed.
Recharge capabilities of battery sets, amongst other things, are additional considerations when designing UPS systems for the Water Industry.
TheUPSTeam Ltd have already been promoting and selling products which meet these standards, but have been utilised in other environments.
The attached photos showcase a UPS system which adheres to an increased IP rating from the standard IP20 to IP54. The product is all front access for servicing and remedial works. The external bypass switch is located within the lockable UPS enclosure, providing a full wrap-around of the UPS system from the critical load, allowing mains power to feed the downstream devices. The switch is a make-before-break design.
The batteries are rechargeable within the defined WIMES 3.07 time-frame and can be sized to end-of-life calculations, if required.
